Nagaizumi Town

Aitaka Sansui Shrine and Momozawa Wasabi

Nagaizumi Town, located at the entrance to the Izu Peninsula in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture, is a town rich in nature with views of Mt. Fuji and the Hakone mountain range. The town is also blessed with beautiful water, such as the Kise River that flows through the center of the town, and the Momozawa River that springs from Mt. Aitaka. In particular, the source of the Momozawa River has been selected as one of the "100 Best Spring Waters in Shizuoka Prefecture," and Aitaka Sansui Shrine, located at the source, has long been worshiped as the god of water. The source of the Momozawa River flows over exposed lava within the temple grounds, and in the surrounding area you can observe the unique topography of "plate joints" created by the lava flow. Please come and visit Nagaizumi Town, where beautiful nature and history coexist in harmony.

"Momozawa Wasabi" grows near the source of the Momozawa River on Mt. Aitaka. Mt. Aitaka once experienced repeated eruptions, and volcanic eruptions store rainwater, which then becomes abundant spring water to irrigate the wasabi fields. The trees in the forest act as a natural curtain blocking direct sunlight, creating the perfect environment for wasabi to grow. Momozawa Wasabi is a gem that embodies the blessings of pure water.

Wasabi is a delicate plant that prefers cool shade, and the area around the source of the Momozawa River is an ideal environment. The deep valley of Mt. Aitaka protects the wasabi fields from the sun, and the water that springs from the mountainside is rich in nutrients. Momozawa wasabi is characterized by a sharp, pungent taste that hits the nose, with a hint of sweetness. Please give it a try.
